A couple of months ago we informed you of the upcoming changes that are being made to Google Analytics.
Universal Analytics is being sunset to make way for the new and improved Google Analytics 4. (exciting times)!
On the 1st of July 2023 the current version of Google Analytics will stop working.
This means that current users of universal analytics will have to upgrade to Google Analytics 4.
In this blog I will explain how to create a Google Analytics 4 property so that you are ready for the transition.
Getting Started With Google Analytics 4
It is better to get Google Analytics 4 setup as soon as possible so that you have as much legacy data as possible. Once UA is switched off, there will be a finite time (a minimum of 6 months) for you to access this.
To get started go to the admin section of the Google Analytics dashboard.
You do this by clicking ‘Admin’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.
You will be taken to the admin screen of Google Analytics.
Click ‘GA4 Setup Assistant’ under the property tab.
You will then be directed to the following page.
If you already have a Google Analytics 4 property, then it will say ‘connected’ whereas if you are yet to create one it will say ‘not connected’.
On this page click the blue ‘Get Started’ button.
The following pop-up screen will appear.
Tick the box that says: “Enable data collection using your existing tags”.
Then click ‘Create property’.
You will then be directed to the following screen.
Congratulations, the new Google Analytics 4 property is now created!
Your Universal Analytics property will continue to collect data until the cutoff date of the 1st of July 2023.
Your Google Analytics 4 property will also now be collecting data.
Next month I will be detailing how to ensure that your new Google Analytics 4 property is tracking goals and events properly.
